Flux Magazine School Project (Fall 09)

The Flux project was an design exerciseI did in my last semester of college. The project for me dealt with afictional Magazine company called Flux Magazine. The magazine reported on contemporary Art, Music andCultural activities in various places. The exercise was mainly to be spontaneous about abrand. By simply picking from a group of preselected words that the class had a hand in producing, eachstudent was to pick a word and base their brand of of it.
It had five phases that go as follows:
Introduction to the brand.Promotional Card - (Goes in magazines, mailed out, emailed etc.)20in x 30in Poster.Demo Brochure about the Magazinecontaining snippets of the kind of art that would be in the magazine. The brochure also worked as a way for me to show some of myexperimental work. The final piece was a package designfor the product we were creating. The Package I came up with was acollectors edition sleeve that would be ordered off the internet orpurchased in a store that had about 5 volumes inside for that givenyear.

Introduction of Flux Brand -
This is basically an informational that brings across the concept and design elements of the project. Its meant for the client as a means to understanding the direction I was going. This direction changed with time to something I was more comfortable with.

Flux - Fluctuation for your mind & soul

Is an art magazine company based around finding artists all across the globe.
Musicians and Artists to be more precise. Flux’s mission is to find the art and music that fluctuates and melds with the peoples mind and soul . We are the artists magazine or the magazine for those who wish to find out more about both types of arts.

note: the call-outs around the squares up top are the CMYK values.
Also the text underneath the different colored Logos are the names given to each color.
Mindography Blue, Delux Registration, Soulified Orange, Fluctuatory Green.
Promotional Card-
The second piece of the project was the Promotional card. It was meant to be sent via email or physical mail to mainly non-members of the magazine. It also doubled as a post card.
After I had started working on the promotional card my love for the original logo and brand style began to wane. I didnt feel it connected with the subject as well as when I had initially created it. So I began reworking the logo. The beginning was a bit more wacky and playful. I tried to change this into something a bit more smooth yet conveyed some movement. The new logo reminded me of Atoms and or bubbles forming. In other words some type of fluctuation. Thats the best explanation for why the logo has changed so dramatically when compared with the original.
Advertising Poster-

Next is the 20X30in poster which was for advertising purposes. Each new one, had there been more would have consisted of a new artist.

Brochure -

Next is the demo brochure that I mocked up for the class. Since the Magazine would be tackling art, music and literature as well as other cultural topics, I demonstrated the art and literature side.

Package Design -

The final part of the project was to design a box die and art along with making a miniature comp. The comp unfortunately was kept by the professor, its whereabouts after the project are unknown.
Logos -

These last two images are the redone logo the name for its color scheme and the two alternate color schemes that I thought about using at the time.
